Spain VS USA

For fun, I started keeping a list a month or so before my time in Madrid was up of what I would miss but what I was excited to get back to. I thought it could be fun to share! Some are little and silly, some are more bigger and more serious. I would just jot things down as they came up and I thought of them. I love both places. I will maybe come back and add more if I find any more scraps of paper with fragments of this list on it.
USA | Spain |
Free refills | Public transportation |
Large drinks to begin with | Tapas/cafe/bar culture |
Being able to talk to everyone in my native language | More laidback about time |
Also I just love English. (I've been thinking a lot about this Juan Luis Borges interview where he talked about how English is different from Spanish and why he likes it so much. It's so beautiful.) | Dinner at 10PM |
I miss having a sense of community, and people to interact with besides other 20-year-olds. I wouldn't consider myself a giant kid person but I've really missed talking to kids. Same with people older than me. | Walking everywhere |
We're better about racism/sexism/homophobia. We're far from perfect but at least we're having conversations and addressing the issues instead of sweeping everything under the rug. | Student discounts for everything |
House parties are better than the club | Alcohol isn't taboo, so the habits/culture around it is healthier |
The First Amendment | No Second Amendment |
Better about dietary restrictions | One million things to do always |
Clorox wipes. There are no Clorox wipes in Spain. Probably because they're bad for the environment but. | Not so humid |
More shows on streaming | Easy to travel to other cities/countries |
Giant grocery stores | Grocery stores across the street |
Condiments | Thrift stores |
The Bachelor | Cheap nail salons |
Smoothies that aren't juice | Use the AC/heating a reasonable amount instead of making the house a freezer in the summer and a furnance in the winter |
iMessage invisible ink feature | WhatsApp emoji reaction options and reply feature |
Spacial awareness | |
No weird cover songs in all restaurants
Less smoking | |
No royal family | |
Don't need reservations for every restaurant
My lilac shampoo (although it's been discontinued since I've been gone, devastating)
Well, the numbers don't lie. According to my super thought-out and precisely calculated pro-pro list, it looks like the US is better, hard fact. I love my country.
